I am a huge star trek fan, and I love Discovery. Watched about five minutes of S02E01 and hated that even more. I watched season 1, but have very little recollection of the story, because it was stupid, dull and filled with people I had no interest in. If they wanted ultra-high tech set it after STV. If they wanted weird aliens make up a new one, it's not as if real Klingons will be upset if they're left out. Being able to do something with CGI is not justification for doing it. And the level of technology makes no sense. Weak characters produces bad dialogue, bad dialogue produces bad stories. This produces characters you either don't care about or actively dislike (and you can't hope they get killed because you hate the characters that could kill them too). It's clearly only like that because that's how it was written. Lazy and/or bad writers have noticed that lots of drama are very sombre, and mistakenly think that they can substitute misery for drama or pathos. This is like The Walking Dead, and for the same reasons (see below), but at least the setting of TWD justifies the bleakness of existence in that world. I'm not convinced that any of the characters want to live there. Who the hell would want to live in the STD universe. All other Star Trek series showed a future you would want to live in. The single factor that destroys it for me is it's miserable. I actually enjoyed a few of them more than any episode so far. The specials were also a nice prologue to season 2. By the end of season 1 it feels like a different show. I don't want to spoil things but it gets much much more interesting and the klingons were so bad in season 1, I almost gave up too. I also wish it was less serial and more episodic like star trek should be. And I agree it isn't the greatest change. Its got me glued to my seat but the tone is much more serious than ever before. They question their existence, make tough decisions that effect entire races/planets, ride the prime directive. And season 2 has really got me, its mixing engaging stories and developing characters really well. The bulk of Season 1 discovery was a hot mess but as it continued and the klingons got less screen time I really got into it. I really like discovery, I didn't at first. So for some reference my star trek series ranked are TNG > TOS > DS9 > voyager > Enterprise, which was terrible in so many ways but I still watched it because it had moments that weren't completely cringetastic. I’m just a life long Star Trek fan and am very disappointed in the new show. But unless they have a completely new writing staff, I’m not sure it’s gonna last.Įdit: I have watched The Orville and it’s ok. How do you guys feel about it? Should I power through season one, I’ve heard it gets a little better. I mean god damn literally every scene is stupid with no relief. The crew members childishly argue with the captain every single time he has a thought or command making it seem completely fake and as if the writers never watched any Star Trek or have any idea how an organization like that works. There is practically no comic relief, keeping everything riding on the audience taking all this boring stuff so seriously. The tardigrade based, spore-drive is straight up idiotic and watching the writers get lost in it is mildly entertaining. The Klingon scenes are all cringe-worthy terrible. I don’t think I’m gonna finish season one. I love Star Trek, but this show is awful.
